in fall 2014, rutgers university newark?entered into an agreement with northeast normal university, one of the top ranked chinese universities directly administered by the chinese ministry of education (moe), to establish the?“rutgers university newark institute at northeast normal university”?(runin) program?on the campus of northeast normal university in changchun china. the agreement received formal approval in spring 2015 from the chinese ministry of education and the program was officially launched on the 1st of september, 2015. based on this agreement, rutgers university newark offers three bachelor degree programs including two bachelor of science degree programs in supply chain management and in finance through rutgers business school (rbs) and one bachelor of arts degree program in public and non-profit administration?through the school of public affairs and administration (spaa). all courses required for the completion of these degrees programs are taught in english by the faculty members approved or assigned by faculty of arts and sciences of newark (fasn), rbs and spaa.
currently there are 196 students enrolled in this program, 32 in public and non-profit administration and 164 in business. these students all have taken the chinese national college entrance examination (gaokao) and passed the first tire university base score requirement for admission. according to the agreement these students are eligible to transfer to the rutgers university newark upon successfully completing their second year of courses at the runin campus in china. starting fall 2016, runin program will enroll 300 students each year.
at the moment, there are only a handful of us research universities that have similar structures set up in china with the approval of the chinese moe. in addition to our institute at northeast normal, university of michigan, carnegie mellon and university of pittsburgh have also established their institutes on the campuses of their partner universities in china.
changchun is the capital of jilin province with a population of 7.6 million. it is located in the center of the northeastern region of china. runin will welcome more rutgers faculty members to teach there and encourage more rutgers newark students to do their study abroad programs there.
